In the late 1800's and early 1900's it was quite common for people to collect odd and unusual items of interest, be they real or fake (most were fake), to display in their homes. While we do not have a mummy to unwrap with great fanfare, (yes, they had parties to do this), we have collected a few items we find fun, interesting and, of course, curious. We are constantly looking for new ones, (like the alligator head I saw at the truckstop the other day, but, sadly, left behind), but these are a few fun things we have picked up along the way.
Our latest acquisition, a pirahna, purchased in Searchlight, Nevada. His teeth are wicked-mean!
Gomez's favorite. He found it in South America. Yes, it is real! Real goat skin, that is! This shrunken head really is an exquisite piece of workmanship. The hair is amazing! It is punched into the skin with a special tool and as a wigmaker, this is something I have had to do on latex severed heads for theater productions. It is tedious, but also quite fun!
On our trip to Tombstone last year, we stopped at a place called "Rooster Cogburn's Ostrich Ranch" and picked up a little something...
I hope you have enjoyed this little tour of some of our curiosities. There will be new posts as we find new items!

an ostrich egg, naturally!
When the eggs are laid, they are covered in a natural coating that protects and hardens them. You can buy them to eat and save the shell, or, as we did, just buy a beautiful shell. It is a fun place to go and, if you have kids it is a must-see and do kind of place!
This next item was made by Gomez, rather than purchased, but it is so amazing, I felt it deserved a place in our cabinet of curiosities.
Gomez made this for Halloween a few years ago and we love it so much it stays up year-round. The pistols are antiques that he picked up in Spain many years ago. He says they are functional, but he wouldn't want to be the one to shoot them.I hope you have enjoyed this little tour of some of our curiosities. There will be new posts as we find new items!
